Planting design can range from a simple flowerbed to reshaping an entire property. Beginning at our initial consultation, together we can help develop your ideas into a final design plan. Larger planting design projects benefit from careful planning. A few steps include: a property layout sketch/drawing, considering optional planting and surfacing materials, determining budget, creating a final planting property layout and of course, ensuring the team you hire is committed to bring your design to reality. Ross Lawn Service is here to help.
Our excavation equipment allows our team to prepare your property for various landscape and lawn care projects. Such as: leveling ground for reseeding, reshaping the landscape to create a new landscape design, or creating new beds for plants or vegetables. We can also spread gravel, stones and mulch to create pathways and coverings for hard-to-care-for spaces.
Choosing the right season to trim and prune trees and bushes is important. Pruning too soon or too late can harm trees and bushes as well as affect the bloom expected. Ross Lawn Service is able to help you make those decisions as well as properly prune the branches. We also provide emergency storm services – tree trimming, shredding and debris removal.
Have an overgrown pasture or lot? Our bush hog equipment ranges from 5 – 10 ft wide, is high quality and well maintained to provide quick, clean-cut areas.
Ross Lawn Service offers Ice and snow removal for residential and commercial clients. We have the team and equipment to clear snow and ice from walkways and one-car driveways to large commercial parking lots. We can also spread salt or blended melting materials to remove residual ice and snow. Allow us to provide a safe walking and driving area on your property.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do we begin a landscape and planting design project?
A landscape and planting design project, small or large, benefits from pre-planning. Ross Lawn Service would be pleased to consult with you and help you complete your project. Some of the planning steps include: creating your property map; considering materials (mulch, stone, rock) and planting types (flowers, shrubs, trees) colors, and specifications; considering expenses; drawing preliminary designs; and determining the work required to complete the project. We are here to help with your landscape and lawn care project!
What are some services that Ross Lawn Services does NOT provide?
Fertilization and Hardscaping are two areas that we do not service.
Fertilization for lawns and gardens may be provided by professionals who are trained and responsible for accurate application of these products in order to protect the environment. We do provide landscaping with rocks and river stone, etc, but we do not specialize in Hardscaping for decks, patios, pools, etc.
Can improper mulching harm plants and trees?
Yes. Mulching is very helpful to retain moisture but it can damage trees and shrubs when too much mulch is applied over the root ball or resting against the trunk. Roots often grow up and into the mulch causing stem girdling roots which can kill trees. Mulch also adds decorative value on your property and is available in many colors and textures.
How are weeds controlled?
Keeping your lawn healthy with weekly mowing is helpful. Barren spots can be raked and reseeded. Locally, dandelions, clover, thistle, and plantain are common lawn weeds. For chemical lawn treatments, Ross Lawn Service suggests that you contact a qualified lawn treatment company.
How often should a lawn be mowed?
During the spring and summer, weekly mowing is advised to keep your lawn healthy and looking its best. Less frequent mowing allows for the growth of weeds. We keep our mower blades sharp and clean to prevent damage to the grass blades.
When should new grass be planted?
Late summer and early fall is typically noted as the best time to start new grass. However, it is possible to successfully plant grass in spring after the frost has ended but before summer arrives. It’s important to prepare your soil and to select the appropriate grass seed for the area where you are planting. We would be pleased to help you make your lawn beautiful.
What height should cut grass be?
Mowing does cause stress on the lawn grass, so it needs time to recover after mowing. Ideally, we cut grass no less than 3 inches in height during our mowing service and we also change direction of the mowing process each time we mow. Taller grass retains more moisture, and blocks sunlight from reaching the ground so there’s less opportunity for weeds to grow. During the drier summer months, the grass should be even higher than 3 inches high.
When should trees and shrubs be trimmed?
There are the exceptions to the rule, but non-blooming trees and shrubs should be trimmed in late winter while fully dormant. Summer-blooming trees and shrubs should be trimmed in late winter and spring-blooming trees and shrubs may be trimmed immediately after they bloom.
